Supporting, educating, and advancing legal finance professionals across Scotland
The Society of Law Accountants in Scotland (SOLAS) is the professional home for legal accounting and finance professionals throughout Scotland. We support, educate, and connect those working at the heart of Scotland’s legal sector, helping our members stay informed, confident, and future‑ready.
As the recognised body for professionals managing the financial operations of Scottish law firms, SOLAS exists to raise standards, promote best practice, and foster a vibrant community built on shared knowledge and experience.
Whether you are an established legal accountant, new to the profession, working within legal services, or simply keen to learn more, SOLAS offers a welcoming gateway to professional growth, networking, and learning.
What we stand for
At SOLAS, we believe that strong legal finance underpins strong legal practice. Everything we do is centred on education, collaboration, and continuous professional development.
Our objectives, defined by our Memorandum and Articles of Association, focus on bringing professionals together to exchange ideas, share expertise, and explore best practice in legal accounting in an ever‑changing regulatory and commercial landscape.
Professional standards you can trust
Integrity, professionalism, and accountability sit at the heart of everything SOLAS does. We are committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards within the legal accounting profession and supporting our members in doing the same.
Our Code of Ethics sets out the principles and standards expected of SOLAS members, reinforcing trust within the profession and confidence across the wider legal community. It provides a clear framework for ethical decision‑making, professional conduct, and responsibility in the management of legal finances.
By promoting ethical best practice, SOLAS helps ensure that legal accounting in Scotland remains transparent, robust, and worthy of the confidence placed in it.
Learn. Connect. Grow.
We deliver a programme of regular branch meetings across Scotland, giving members the opportunity to:
- Hear from expert guest speakers
- Engage in informed discussion on topical issues
- Share experiences with peers from other firms
- Build valuable professional networks
Alongside our meetings, SOLAS runs a structured Evening Course designed to help individuals develop confidence, competence, and practical expertise across all key areas of law accounting, supporting both career progression and professional excellence.
A proud history, a forward looking future
SOLAS has been part of the Scottish legal profession for over a century. First founded in Aberdeen in 1910, the Society has evolved alongside the profession it serves.
After an early period of growth and wartime disruption, SOLAS was revitalised in 1953, once again beginning in Aberdeen before expanding to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, and Inverness. Each chapter of our history reflects the same enduring commitment: supporting those who manage law firm finances and helping the profession thrive.
Today, SOLAS continues to build on this strong foundation, modern, inclusive, and focused firmly on the future of legal accounting in Scotland.
