About SOLAS Membership
Membership of the Society of Law Accountants in Scotland (SOLAS) reflects a commitment to professionalism, integrity, and continuous development within the legal finance sector. Full, Associate, Honorary and Retired Members are all aligned with the Society’s values and Code of Ethics, supporting the maintenance of high professional standards.
Membership Types & Recognition
SOLAS supports members throughout their studies, professional careers and retirement through five membership categories:
- Full Member – qualified members entitled to use the designation SLA.
- Associate Member – members entitled to use the designation SLA Associate.
- Student Member – individuals completing an approved SOLAS professional course pathway.
- Retired Member – members who retain their connection with SOLAS following retirement.
- Honorary Member – individuals recognised for their contribution to the profession and the Society.
Membership renewal
Full and Associate Members renew their membership annually through this product.
Student membership is managed through the relevant education programme. Retired and Honorary memberships are renewed automatically at no charge, so these members do not need to purchase a renewal.
These designations reflect professional standing and should only be used while membership remains in good standing. Members must not permit others to use their name or designation inappropriately.
Professional Standards & Responsibilities
Members are expected to:
- Undertake only work they are competent to perform
- Exercise care, diligence, and sound professional judgement
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legal and professional requirements
- Continue to develop their expertise and skills
Confidentiality & Integrity
All members are required to uphold strict confidentiality in relation to client and employer affairs. This includes:
- Protecting sensitive information
- Ensuring confidentiality standards are maintained within their teams
- Acting with integrity at all times
Conflict of Interest
Members must act in the best interests of their employer or client. Any actual or potential conflicts of interest must be disclosed promptly. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action.
Professional Conduct & Discipline
SOLAS membership carries responsibility. Any misconduct may be referred to the Society’s Council and dealt with under formal disciplinary procedures, ensuring the continued integrity and reputation of the profession.
