Origins and Evolution of SOLAS

The Society of Law Accountants in Scotland (SOLAS) was founded in Aberdeen in 1910, at a time when the role of the law accountant was still emerging as a distinct and specialised profession. From its earliest days, the Society brought together individuals working in legal finance to share knowledge, develop skills, and support one another in an increasingly complex area of practice.

Following an initial period of growth, the Society’s activities were disrupted by the First World War. A combination of lost membership and reduced engagement led to SOLAS being allowed to lapse in 1924.
The Society was revived in the 1950s, once again through the initiative of professionals in Aberdeen. The re-establishment of the Aberdeen branch in 1954 marked the beginning of a new era, followed by the formation of a Glasgow branch in 1958 and further expansion into Edinburgh and Dundee.

Over time, SOLAS established itself as a truly national organisation. The Dundee branch was re-established in 1988, and the introduction of classes in Inverness in 1991 led to the formation of a branch there in 1993.

Today, SOLAS reflects more than a century of evolution, shaped by changes in the legal sector, advances in financial regulation, and the growing importance of specialist expertise in law accounting.
